Mali: Tuareg rebels demand autonomous Azawad
Tuareg militia in northern Mali's Azawad region. Mali's government is boasting a deal with Tuareg leaders granting autonomy to Azawad—but the biggest rebel factions are holding out for more power, including the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) and allied High Council for the Unity of Azawad. On the day of the signing, hundreds of Tuareg youth marched in Kidal against the accord, carrying banners and chanting slogans including "Better martyrdom than humiliation." After marching through the town, the protesters took their demonstration to a camp of "peacekeepers" from Mali's UN mission, MINUSMA. Clashes were meanwhile reported between the MNLA and one of the pro-government militias that signed the accord.
