Throughout the 18-month siege of El Fasher [14], capital of Sudan's North Darfur state, international human rights observers had been warning [15] that the city's residents faced a general massacre when it eventually fell to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF [14]). Yet nothing was done, apart from ineffectual Great Power diplomacy that had zero impact [16] on the ground. Now that the foretold massacre [17] is underway [18]—with hundreds killed [19], thousands missing [20], and no end in sight [21]—calls are at last emerging [22] for boycott [23], divestment [24] and sanctions [25] aganst the United Arab Emirates, the apparent underwriter of the genocidal RSF. In Episode 301 of the CounterVortex podcast [26], Bill Weinberg notes the contrast with the situation 20 years ago [27], when #SaveDarfur was a cause célèbre [28]—and asks what has changed.
