Hello, readers. Two of you who showed up at my presentation [3] about Peru this evening on Manhattan's Lower East Side brought along your donations for World War 4 Report. So the tally now stands at $175. That means $825 to go. In addition to the costs of travel in South America—which allows us to bring you the most comprehensive coverage available in English on indigenous struggles in the Andes [4]—we also had to install a new anti-spam program in order to re-enable comments. And did numerous other such pain-in-the-butt upgrades. Now we have to pay for it [5]. Your chief blogger and his all-volunteer bare-bones editorial crew are too busy producing journalism to battle with the controls of the website, so we had to contract someone to do the upgrades for us. Please do your part to allow us to continue our work...
If just eight of you responded with a donation of $100 each, we could end this fund drive tonight. Or 16 of you at $50 each. Or 32 of you at $25 each.
OK, we don't have the most graphically exciting website. But that's by choice. We produce something for people who want facts, not flash. People who have a progressive perspective but place greater value in information than exhortation.
We know we don't follow the media spotlight and cover what is already in the news. We intentionally look for stories and angles that the mainstream and "alternative" media alike fail to cover [6].
And we know we don't always toe the fashionable left-wing line, even though we are of the left. We believe in asking tough questions [7] and encouraging critical thinking rather than expounding a "line."
And that's why we're only asking for a modest $1,000. We understand that it is a minority that "gets" what we do. But we still think there is value in doing it. And we depend on that minority to come through for us. If you read us regularly, that puts you in that minority.
We do our part every day. Please do your part.
