As Trump prepares to meet with Xi Jinping [10] at the White House, Students for a Free Tibet [11] prepares a protest in Washington against the Chinese dictator. Protests and civil disobedience actions by New York City's Tibetan community have been mounting [12] since the July self-immolation [13] of longtime activist Lobga Rangzen [14] outside the United Nations building—the first in the wave of Tibetan self-immolations [15] to take place on US soil. This comes amid heightening repression [16] in Tibet following the passage of China's "Ethnic Unity [17]" law. Rather than taking this opportunity to build bonds of solidarity with a local ethnic community by embracing its struggle, growing sectors of the "progressive" milieu—including figures associated [18] with the Democratic Socialists of America [19]—have joined those elements [20] of the "left" looking to [21] the oppressive Chinese state as a model [22] and even a source of sponsorship [23]. Happily, there are glimmers of dissent [24] within the DSA to this consolidating dogma.
