Don't apologize, Gov. Corzine. Americans are dying in Iraq for your right to be an anti-social speedfreak. From Newsday, May 1:
Corzine apologizes upon hospital release
CAMDEN, N.J. - An emotional Gov. Jon S. Corzine was discharged from a hospital yesterday and asked forgiveness for his conduct in a crash in which he was critically injured.A teary-eyed Corzine, who as a passenger in a speeding sport utility vehicle April 12 was not wearing a seat belt, apologized for setting a bad example, especially for young people.
"I certainly hope the state will forgive me," Corzine, 60, said from his wheelchair outside the hospital.
He was headed to the governor's mansion in Princeton, where he will continue his rehabilitation.
Police said the governor's SUV was being driven by a state trooper at 91 mph when it slammed into a guard rail on the Garden State Parkway. Corzine wasn't wearing his seat belt, in violation of state law. He has not been cited by police.
Corzine had fractures of his left thigh, 11 ribs, his breastbone and other bones. Doctors operated on him three times and inserted a metal rod to stabilize his leg.
The multimillionaire governor, who is paying personally for his medical treatment and recovery, plans to continue his rehabilitation at Drumthwacket, the governor's two-story mansion, instead of in his apartment in Hoboken.
The mansion isn't handicapped-accessible but has been getting upgrades since Corzine's accident.
The governor's spokesman, Anthony Coley, said a portable chair lift will help Corzine move between floors. Also, an outdoor pool will be heated for his use during therapy.
The mansion also has been equipped to allow Corzine to hold video conferences with staff members back at the statehouse in Trenton.
"The governor is in no hurry," Coley said.
