A former member of the Red Army Faction (RAF) arrested [5] in Berlin last week after 30 years on the run has been remanded in custody. Daniela Klette was apprehended following an informant's tip, prosecutors announced [6] Feb. 27 A second suspect was also detained in the operation, although authorities later determined that he is not tied to the group. Popularly known as the Baader-Meinhof Gang, the RAF was founded by Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof in the 1970s, and has carried out a series of bombings [7], assassinations [8], kidnappings, robberies and shoot-outs with the police.
Klette is in custody on charges related to six armed robberies between 1999 and 2016, allegedly carried out with two other suspected members of the group, Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub. Traces of Klette's DNA were also found at the scene in 1991 after the group launched a gun attack [12] on the US embassy in Bonn.
Klette was flown via helicopter to Bremen, the region where the robberies took place. She is now awaiting trial in custody in Verden. Both Garweg and Volker Staub remain at large, and are currently on the EU's most wanted list [9]. (Jurist [13], The Guardian [14])
