Tsleil-Waututh "water protectors" take to their kayaks to protest the Trans Mountain pipeline at the Kinder Morgan facility in Cates Park, British Columbia, July 14. The project to bring tar-sands oil over the Rocky Mountains to the Salish Sea for export to global markets got a new lease on life after the Kinder Morgan company responded to a long protest campaign and pulled out. The Canadian government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau immediately stepped in and agreed to take the project over. With the Tsleil-Waututh First Nation and their environmentalist allies pledging to resist to the end, the Trans Mountain project is shaping up as a Canadian version of the Dakota Access protests that drew world attention to the plains of North Dakota in 2016.
